Run dry protection
Water pump works as long as water submerged 1 inch height of the pump's bottom. No need to be fully submersible.The protection circuit will gets hot and shut itself off if run dry. Once it cooling down, it runs again. Therefore, it is not auto shut off. You need to turn it off when not in use.
Bottom intake design
It can whisk away water to 1/4 inch from the water level and allows to pass 1/5 inch debris/fish waste.
